I want to Suck your blood

Heels and Potholes
I want to suck your blood

Right on the heels of the incredibly hyped teenage vampire movie Twilight is a newly revived centuries old fashion trend, the Vampire look. This look is achieved with a mixture of Victorian and Gothic fashion styles. Moving away from the Transylvanian monster in which we usually relate this blood sucker to, the current is more of a romanticized figure that is both beautiful and dangerously sexy. This style certainly has more of a modern day twist to its much older counterpart and is appropriately named Vampire Chic. Tuxedo-inspired looks bring back the days of dark where reds and blacks tango with ruffles and velvets. It is sexy twist to the traditional black-tie. Tight black trousers and long dark gowns are sweeping through the streets. Goth has returned but this time it is more effortless and romantic leaning towards sensual intrigue verses horrific shock. Although there may be many who thought they put Goth in its final resting place, hoping it would never claw its way out of the crypt, this time it has resurfaced carrying with it romantic elegance and dark sexuality. If you dare to follow this trend, which I fully intend to do, you won’t have to worry about being accused of vampirism and getting yourself staked. At least for now!

Vampires are creatures which have always stood out and above their undead counterparts and other night walking monsters in regards to elegance and fashion sense. These creatures seem to accumulate mass amounts of wealth and prestige throughout their centuries of feeding all the while looking no less than royalty. The power and seduction they hold over their victims is intoxicating and quite sensual, most times rendering their adversaries helpless to their deathly advances and crushed velvet suits. Always impeccably dressed this alluring outsider was pairing leather and lace long before designers deemed it as being fashionable.

This look along with its creator should only go out at night where the dark sky can provide a twinkling backdrop to your mythical ensemble. With the makeup palettes moving into the dark gray, silver, blue and blood red hues, you will certainly look more like a creature of the night, not meant to be walking around with mere mortals of the sun. Mixing hints of Victorian white on top of polished dark pieces will certainly get you in the mood for taking a bite out of the evening. And, if your scenery happens to be lit by candle light all the better to seduce and captivate an unexpecting mate.

If you are not quite ready to make your move over to the dark side full time perhaps focusing on one evening to test out your mysterious look will do. February 14th also know as St. Valentine’s Day is sneaking upon us and is a perfect time for feeding and drinking by candlelight. A romantic day indeed red, lace and love can be seen everywhere. Not until the fourteenth century was romance linked to Saint Valentine by a language used in the law of courts. Established in Paris on St. Valentine's Day in 1400, the court dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. Judges were selected by women on the basis of a poetry reading. I don’t think that form of selection in our courts would work in this day and age however it is still romantic none the less.
Centuries later we still see parts of this long ago link between Valentine’s Day and romance in our different cultures today. Poems, Valentine’s cards, romance and courtship still make an appearance on this day while restaurants reservations and lingerie sales go through the roof. So if you are planning on slipping into something seductive for your Valentine this year, may I suggest you channel your inner vampire. Just don’t bite too hard!

Although I am not a huge fan of following “trends”, I must say this one has got my motor running. It is about time crushed velvet and the dinner jacket made a come back. If romance is lost in life at least we can have it and all its intoxicating textures and colors in fashion. Remember fashion is supposed to be fun so give it a shot. Express your inner Vampire. You may never know what lies beneath your mortal skin. Mwwwa aa aaaah!
